The waiting list for Canadian immigration now has more than 1 million names.

The demand for Canadian visas is growing steadily and was described by Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney as a "huge problem" on Twitter this week, following the release of the news that the Canada wait-list has reached one million.

In response to the increase in demand, the Canadian House of Commons has agreed to hold a series of hearings to find a sustainable solution.

Mr Kenney is seeking to find a balance between a cautious immigration policy and th traditional Canadian pro-immigration political stance.

“While Canada continues to welcome historically high numbers of new immigrants, and maintains the most open and generous immigration system in the world, we have to carefully manage the large number of people who want to be Canadian,” said an official statement issued by Kenney's office this week.

Oppoisition spokesperson Don Davies said the Government should increase resources to deal with the increasing demand. He reflected however that this approach is unlikely.

“They're not doing that, leaving only one policy option, which is to shut the door on the number of applications that can be made,” he said. “I think they already have a pre-ordained answer. ... They're going to limit the numbers of applications for the first time in history.”
