Skilled trades the toughest Canadian jobs to fill

Persistent talent shortages continue to affect employer’s growth plans, an international survey has found.

Tradespeople jobs are the hardest positions to fill in Canada, a survey has found.

While the global economic downturn has increased the numbers of job seekers, employers have not had an easier time finding the skilled workers they need.

According to recruitment firm Manpower Canada’s talent-shortage survey, 31 per cent of employers worldwide and 21 per cent of employers in Canada are experiencing problems filling key skilled positions.

“We are seeing a ‘jobless’ recovery in many parts of the world, yet where there are jobs available employers are having difficulty filling positions,” says Byrne Luft, vice-president of marketing for Manpower Canada.

Canadian tradesperson jobs were found to be the hardest positions to fill in the country. Other occupations in the top ten toughest jobs to fill were sales reps (second hardest), technicians (3), drivers (4), secretaries and office support staff (5), engineers (6), chefs/cooks (7), mechanics (8), nurses (9), and teachers (10).

The global study surveyed more than 35,000 employers in 36 countries and territories during the first quarter of 2010.
