Premier of Ontario calls for caution in Canada immigration law changes

The premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty, has called on the government to ensure that non-skilled workers are not shut out of Canada. Changes to Canada immigration are being considered in order to make sure that skilled workers are encouraged to enter the country. However, Mr McGuinty has said the government should not exclude unskilled workers from this.

Speaking at a news conference, Mr McGuinty said: "I wouldn't want to shut out folks who don't have a skill. I wouldn't be here." He added that his family was part of the exodus from Ireland and they brought with them a "solid work ethic". The Canada immigration minister, Diane Finely, has yet to announce the details of the changes to the law, although it is believed that skilled families will be let into the country faster as a result of the alterations. Ms Finlay was first elected to parliament in 2004 and was re-elected in 2006.

Canada welcomes new immigrants: The Canadian Visa Bureau can assist skilled workers interested in Canadian immigration. More information on Canadian visas is available on the website. Anyone applying for a Canadian visa should begin by completing the online Canadian visa application to see if they meet the legislative requirements.
