Opportunities for economic growth between India and Canada

Canada sees opportunities for cooperation with India in the areas of engineering, transport, aeronautics and student exchange, Premier of the Quebec province of Canada Jean Charest has said.

Mr Charest was speaking to the Governor of Maharashtra K Sankaranarayanan at Raj Bhavan as leader of a 130-member delegation of business leaders, officials and heads of universities in Quebec to Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi.

Mr Charest recognised the extraordinary economic growth experienced by India in the last few years saying “both Quebec and India need to capitalise on their complementarities for mutual advantage”.

Quebec is opening its own government office in the Canadian High Commission in Mumbai and upgrading its overall presence in India.

Governor Sankaranarayanan said India attaches great importance to its relations with Canada and shares the Canadian government’s interest in strengthening bi-lateral relations in areas like trade and investment, science and technology, energy, education and agriculture.

He said Maharashtra will welcome cooperation between the universities and Quebec and greater ease for Indian nationals to apply for a Canadian Student Permit.
