Study in Australia gives an employment bonus

Foreigners who study in Australia before applying for residency through the Australian Skilled Migrant Visa have a "big employment bonus" compared to skilled migrants who study for qualifications in other countries, said a university professor.

Professor Lesleyanne Hawthorne, Associate Dean International with the University of Melbourne, told the Australian International Education Conference last week that Australian qualifications gave skilled migrants extra "protection".

Research shows that international students who migrate to the host country are significantly more successful at finding work and adapting compared with sourcing already skilled migrants from offshore, Professor Hawthorne said.

Professor Hawthorne said 85 per cent of onshore students found work within six months of emigrating to Australia
