Mr Green also met with Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal seeking his co-operation to further prevent illegal immigration from Punjab to the United Kingdom.

Green urged Badal to direct the state police department to help the British Embassy to properly verify the identity of persons applying for a  UK Visa.

Governor Shivraj Patil told Mr Green that India’s economic and political influence in the world is growing and the country has enormous dynamism and potential. He said that there was a major scope to further expand economic and business cooperation in wide range of fields like information technology and the sharing of educational tools and technologies.

Patil said although the two countries enjoy mature bilateral relations and strong socio-cultural links the further strengthening of economic and trade ties through joint ventures was needed.

Mr Green is currently undertaking a three-day diplomatic mission to India focusing on consultation with the Indian Government and business leaders on UK immigration policies.
