Jonathan Allen will be the new ambassador to Bulgaria, the British Embassy has announced.

The British Embassy released a statement announcing that Jonathan Allen has been appointed British ambassador to Bulgaria, replacing Steve Williams who will be taking up a new appointment outside the diplomatic service.

This will be the first posting as ambassador for Allen, who is currently the head of the East Africa and Great Lakes department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He will take up his appointment in the second half of 2011.

His previous postings abroad include Brussels, where he was government spokesperson during the British presidency of the EU in 2005, and Cyprus, where he was the embassy second secretary in 1999/2002.

"I am thrilled to be appointed to be Ambassador to Bulgaria. The UK and Bulgaria need to work together in the EU, in Nato and on a range of country to country issues. I look forward to helping the thousands of Brits who holiday in Bulgaria and the British companies who trade there," Allen said in the statement.
