Experts to assess UK immigration needs

A committee of independent experts has been set up to consider the requirements of the United Kingdom's labour market. The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) will advise on which areas of the labour market where UK immigration is needed and where it is not.

The government wants to strike a "new balance" in the operation of the new points-based immigration system, the Home Office said in a statement.

"My committee has a challenging and important work plan ahead of us and I am delighted to have such a distinguished panel of experts to tackle it," commented Professor David Metcalf, who has been appointed chair of the MAC. "We intend to get to work straight away to ensure that the new points system is rooted in the strongest possible foundations," he added.

Crucially, the MAC will advise on specific occupations where shortages need to be filled through UK immigration. The panel is to report to the government in June next year.

Anyone interested in getting a better understanding of their current position under UK visa regulations should request a call from a qualified UK Visa Bureau migration consultant to see if they are eligible for migration to the UK, or call direct on Freephone 0800 043 7011. Alternatively, HSMP visa hopefuls should try taking the HSMP online assessment.
