The Canadian immigration minister has spoken of the large contribution made by Chinese immigrants to the nation.

The Canadian immigration minister said that around 25,000 people immigrated from the People's Republic of China to Canada last year.

The new arrivals meant that the total Chinese population in Canada reached 1.2 million or more. Canada has a long history of welcoming Chinese immigrants to the country, with Chinese communities existing in Canada for over 150 years.

"China is one of our top two source countries for immigration to Canada, I think it's the No.1 source country for permanent residents coming to Canada," Kenney told Xinhua.

"Obviously, Chinese immigrants to Canada have made enormous contribution, it is impossible for us to quantify the economic and cultural contribution of Chinese Canadians," the minister said.

The minister said Chinese immigrants do well in many fields in Canada but particularly noted that Chinese immigrants bring to Canada a great work ethic and good business sense.
