Young people were awarded for their essays and artwork showing how diversity through Canadian immigration and the achievement of Canadians of different backgrounds aided the country.

The awards are part of the 2010 Mathieu Da Costa Challenge, an annual writing and artwork contest that encourages young people to discover the significant contributions made by Canadians of diverse backgrounds throughout history.

Royal Galipeau, Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Orléans, on behalf of Jason Kenney, Minister of Canadian immigration, celebrated with the 13 winners.

“Canada’s cultural diversity remains one of our greatest strengths as a nation,” said MP Galipeau.

“Through their creative writing and artwork, these young Canadians have met the challenge of promoting inter-cultural understanding and Canadian values.”

This year’s winners were selected from more than 980 entries.
