Some 45 new Canadians from 24 countries took the oath of Canadian citizenship recently at a special ceremony during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games.

New citizens were sworn in at a ceremony attended by the Canadian immigration minister.

The Canadian immigration minister Jason Kenney, who attended the ceremony, said each year approximately 170,000 people from around the world become new Canadian citizens.

“Every time Canada welcomes a new citizen, another page of our country’s story is written. Just as Canada’s athletes are making their mark during the Olympics, the individuals celebrated here today will become part of Canada’s vibrant history and culture,” Mr Kenney said.

The ceremony was held at the Government of Canada Olympic Pavilion with special guests Jessica Dubé and Bryce Davison, Olympic pairs figure skaters, and Dave Guscott, the Vancouver Organizing Committee’s executive vice president.

Canadian citizenship candidates after March 15 must study the Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s new comprehensive citizenship study guide, Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship.

The guide provides understanding of Canada’s history, values, symbols and important Canadian institutions, such as Parliament and the Crown, and highlights the country’s two official languages, Aboriginal peoples, and the rich ethnic and religious diversity.
