Indian students welcomed with Canadian visa

Canada is reportedly using its universities to strengthen its diplomatic ties with India by providing more and more Indian students with a Canada visa.

Canadian visas are much easier to obtain than most countries.

Canada is one of the top destinations for Indian students with the rate of Canadian visa applications granted to Indian students rising by more than 400% in the last two years and more than 50 Indian universities having direct ties to 35 Canadian universities.

Canada in New Delhi Deputy High Commissioner Jim Nickel said: "Canadian universities not only provide scholarships but good infrastructure and teaching facilities.

"There is no problem for Indian students to get a visa and go to Canada."

Mr Nickel was speaking at a seminar titled 'Diplomacy, Defence and Development: Canadian and Indian Perspective' held at Berhampur University in eastern India.

Berhampur University Vice Chancellor J K Mohaparta stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in trade and commerce, energy and technology.

"India has a large number of youths of who can play a major role in information technology, engineering and social sciences," said Mr Mohaparta.

This news comes just days after reports in the neighbouring US that Indian citizens face unfair discrimination in the American visa application process and Canada seems keen to capitalise on securing talented Indian students as nine further Canadian universities announced plans to open Indian offices in an effort to attract more students.
