The Canadian visa imitative, known as the Super Visa, intended for parents and grandparents of Canadian residents has been labelled a success by Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said the new Canadian visa programme has been a success in its first three months.

The Canadian visa programme, started in December 2011, has seen over 1,000 approvals with a success rate of 77%.

"I'm please that the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa is working as intended and giving large numbers of eligible parents and grandparents an opportunity to spend extended periods of time with their families in Canada," said Mr Kenney.

The process for acquiring a super visa is relatively simple; applicants must prove that the child or grandchild who is acting as their sponsor meets an income threshold, has the required level of medical insurance and passes a medical examination.

Mr Kenney confirmed that of all the applications made to the Canadian immigration authorities for the Super Visa, 99% of applicants who met these criteria also passed standard requirements for all Canadian visa applications.

Mr Kenney stated that not only was the approval rate significant, 80% of all applications were also processed within 41 calendar days, well below the originally specified target of eight weeks. Mr Kenney claimed that as application volumes continue to rise, all applications will aim to be processed inside eight weeks.
