Changes to the immigration system in Canada are one step closer today, after the Canadian government passed a new bill. Surviving three separate votes, the budget-implementation bill is now expected to be approved by the Commons or the Senate later this week.

Included in the bill are changes to the Canadian immigration system, which will see certain visa applications fast-tracked if applicants have the skills specified in the demand list. The new system would also allow the Immigration Minister to create a list of skill-based categories, so that the Immigration Department can follow an order of priority as proposed by the Minister.

Diane Finley, the Immigration Minister, said the moves will provide skilled workers with a faster process for getting a Canadian visa. She added, "The legislation is intended to provide greater flexibility in addressing a range of labour market needs." She also commented that any applications for a Canadian visa dated after February 26th of this year will be processed under the new bill, if passed by the Senate this week.

Canada welcomes new immigrants: The Canadian Visa Bureau can assist skilled workers interested in Canadian immigration. More information on Canadian visas is available on the website. Anyone applying for a Canadian visa should begin by completing the online Canadian visa application to see if they meet the legislative requirements.
