Over 100 occupations added to New South Wales State Migration Plan

The State of New South Wales has radically expanded its State Migration Program to include a whole new raft of occupations eligible to apply for an Australian visa.

Under previous policy, few occupations were included in the State's Migration Plan; in order to be eligible for a State Sponsored Australia Visa, applicants had to be employed in particularly highly skilled occupations such as taxation accountancy, biomedical engineering or architecture.

However, the list has now been radically expanded to over 100 separate occupations from a range of industries, including over 50 health and medical care occupations such as:

  • Optometrist
  • Osteopath
  • Dentist
  • Audiologist
  • Podiatrist
  • Specialist Physician
  • Cardiologist
  • Paediatrician
  • Thoracic Medicine Specialist
  • Surgeon
  • Urologist
  • Pathologist
  • Radiologist
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Intensive Care Specialist

New South Wales has always prioritised skilled occupations in its State Migration Planand and while medical professionals ostensibly seem to continue that trend, the addition of many trades workers demonstrates the state's willingness to invite a greater diversity of migrant.

New trades occupations added to the Skilled Occupation List include:

  • Metal Fabricator
  • Pressure Welder
  • Sheet metal Trades worker
  • Fitter
  • Metal Machinist
  • Electrician
  • A/C & Refrigeration Mechanic
  • Carpenter
  • Bricklayer
  • Solid Plasterer
  • Plumber
  • Automotive Electrician
  • Motor Mechanic

In conjunction with adding many more jobs to the Skilled Occupations List, the IELTS English language points score for many occupations - which were once as high as 8 - have since been lowered to 6.

"Lowering the IELTS pass mark and widening the State Migration Plan so substantially suggests immigrating to Australia is becoming incredibly more accessibly for those with their hearts set on New South Wales," said Leonie Cotton, casework manager at the Australian Visa Bureau.
