New Parent Visa requirements confirmed

Good news for Parents!

The Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs David Coleman announced last month a new temporary sponsored visa that is designed to allow the parents of migrants to spend a longer time in Australia. The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) subclass 870 visa provides parents and grandparents with a new pathway to reunite with their children and spend time together for a continuous period of up to five years. There is also the opportunity to apply for a second visa for another five years after a short period outside Australia, meaning parents and grandparents will be able to spend up to 10 years in Australia.

Once a sponsorship application has been approved, the parent will then be able to apply for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa. Migrants who want to sponsor their parents on the new Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa will need a taxable income (single or combined) of AUD$ 83,454.80. The application fee for the 3 year visa is AUD$ 5,000 and the 5 year visa is AUD$ 10,000. The sponsorship fee is AUD$ 420.

Unlike the Contributory Parent visa, there are no work rights on the 870 visa and it does not lead to permanent residency.

This new visa is available from 17 April 2019.
