Canadian g'ment gives funding for women's immigration service

Earlier this month the Canadian Government announced it would be giving the Rexdale Women’s Centre increased funding for its immigration and integration support services.

An estimated 1,100 female immigrants will benefit from the services provided by the Centre, which will have funding of more than $5.2 million.  Settlement services will include referrals to community resources, advice and guidance, and help with job searching.  Around $290,000 of the funding will be used to help women’s families and youths develop their English language skills.

"Our Government believes in immigration and is committed to helping newcomers and their families succeed," said Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. "We are also committed to promoting the full participation of women in the economic, social and democratic life of the country. Settlement services give newcomers the help they need to learn one of our official languages, find a job and settle into the community. Their successful integration is good for Rexdale and good for Canada."

The Government has been introducing changes to the immigration system this year so that more people can move to Canada under the Canadian skilled migration program.  It is hoped integration support services will help newcomers to ease into Canadian life and contribute to the economy more effectively, so that they may also benefit from the quality of life Canada has to offer.
