Record uptake of Canada visa from young Irish

Over 6,000 Canadian visas were given out last week during the first four days of the 2013 International Experience Canada (IEC) event held in Ireland, setting an all time record.
Recent reform of the Canadian immigration system has made it easier for young, English speaking migrants with skills in demand to obtain a Canada visa, and uptake rates at the IEC event proved the reforms' success with over 6,300 work visas granted.
"We expected a great demand when the IEC program opened but in truth, the numbers are staggering," said Cathy Murphy executive director of the Irish Canadian Immigration Centre in Toronto.
It is thought that no more visas will be released to Irish citizens this year, another improvement on the past two years when visas were available until late May in 2012 and late summer in 2011.
However, while no more visas are expected this year, Citizenship and Immigration Canada have already confirmed that the quota assigned to Irish applicants will be almost doubled to 10,000 in 2014.
The current Canadian visa open to under-25 Irish applicants allows the holders to live and work in Canada for up to 12 months, with an option of reapplying for a second year. However, a further rule change introduced this year will allow visa holders to simply continue onto their second year, removing the necessity of leaving Canada and reapplying.
