Senator calls for Niagara Falls inclusion on US tourism list

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer has said BrandUSA, the country's official tourism body, should be doing more to support Niagara Falls internationally as a US tourism destination.

Senator Schumer says Niagara Falls should be included on official US tourism lists.

Niagara Falls is one of the most famous sites in the US but the waterfalls do not feature on a federally funded list of the country's top US tourism destinations, instead focussing on New York State's other attractions - particularly New York City.

Senator Schumer has written an open letter to Discover America, the list's publishers, praising them for their work with his state's tourism efforts but urging them to include other sections of the state.

"Although I am thrilled that BrandUSA has promoted some of New York's best attractive tourist destinations, it is that this federally funded tourism entity helps America discover the wonders of Western New York," wrote the senator.

"Whether tourists marvel at the beauty of Niagara Falls State Park or study Buffalo's historic architecture...I have long suggested that folks visit Western New York whenever possible.

"I am urging BrandUSA to do the same through Discover America. I have long fought for federal funding for the region's breathtaking sites and now I am fighting for these wonders to receive a sufficient amount of publicity so tourists know where to go in Western New York."

Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls straddling the border between Canada and the US and has been famous for the Maid of the Mist boat tours which have been travelling to the falls since 1846.
