Notice for holders of expired UK visas unable to leave due to volcanic ash

Migrants and travelers who have been unable to leave the UK due to the aviation disruptions caused by the volcanic ash plumes but whose UK visas have now expired have been reassured by the UK Border Agency.

UK Visa

The UK Border Agency has released a notice for those who cannot leave the UK due to the grounding of flights.

Ash plumes from the eruption of the volcano Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland have caused the grounding of most flights in Europe for the fifth consecutive day, with thousands of passengers remaining stranded. Some 63,000 flights have been cancelled since Thursday as airspace remains closed or partially closed in more than 20 countries.

The UK Border Agency has released a statement saying they appreciate that many have been unable to leave the country to exceptional circumstances beyond their control.

Travelers with an expired UK visa are asked to ensure that they retain proof of planned travel that would have enabled them to leave the UK before the UK visa expired.

Please only contact the agency for further UK immigration advice in exceptional circumstances.
