People who have been in a genuine relationship with a UK citizen or permanent resident are able to apply for an unmarried partner visa if they meet certain requirements. This visa option is open to both heterosexual and same-sex relationships. Dependent children can also be included in any such applications.

Unmarried Partner Visa Requirements

The sponsor and the applicant must have lived together in a relationship 'akin to marriage' for at least 2 years
They must have met each other
They must intend to continue to live together permanently
The applicant must be able to support him/herself, or be supported by their partner, without access to public funds
There must be adequate accommodation in place

Conditions of the Visa

Applicants who wish to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) are required to hold the Unmarried Partner Visa for a total of 60 months, with a renewal at 33 months before they become eligible to apply for ILR.
