When traveling to any country, mistakes can happen. Many visitors to the USA are under the misconception that the country is all about freedom and expression. However, there are some rules. Those visiting, especially those looking to relocate to the USA, need to ensure they understand the things they should avoid in the United States. Here are some of the biggest mistakes to avoid.

1. Avoid Controversial Topics

America is a very open and free land in many ways, but discussing controversial topics such as politics may not be worth the hassle. These topics seem to set off some strong emotions with many Americans, so it is best to avoid them.

The only exception to this rule is if you know the individual very well. Discussion of these topics with individuals in public such as in bars or restaurants can have varied consequences, so it is best to simply avoid them if possible.

2. Embrace the diversity of food

Remember, America is a true melting pot where cultures from around the globe have come together and that is reflected in food choices. You will not find simply one type of food here and even some restaurants have varied culinary options and fusion foods mixed on the menu.

True American cuisine is difficult to nail down. Whilst it is true Apple Pie, Hamburgers, and Fried Chicken are considered very American, the food scene is far more diverse. When visiting any part of the United States, embrace the regional food culture.

Each state, region, and sometimes even small communities have their regional food and you will be surprised at how connected with the area you can become by simply embracing its regional cuisine.

3. Time is Important

Americans are far more focused on time than many other countries. When making appointments in America, never be fashionably late. It is considered rude. Having respect for the other person’s time is very important and Americans can become highly agitated when they think their time is not being respected.

4. Traffic Laws

Certain countries have very lax traffic laws. Speeding or not wearing a seatbelt is fine in some countries, but not in the USA. The United States maintains strict traffic laws enforced by local, county, and state police entities. They will not hesitate to write a ticket to anyone violating these rules.

5. Distance Can Be a Factor

One of the most common issues people have when visiting the USA from the UK is the notion of distance. European countries tend to be smaller. Many road trippers can hop from one country to another in a single day without a second thought. Not in the USA.

The United States is vast and stretches 3500 miles (5632km). Traveling across the country can take days or up to a week depending on your route. You might be able to travel across a state, or 2 in a day, but not more than that, and if you get to Texas, prepare to spend a whole day crossing that one state.

When traveling in the USA, utilize travel apps to help you manage distance more appropriately so you do not underestimate the distance from one location to another.

6. Avoid Pushing Stereotypes

This is a big one! Americans have begun to loathe being stereotyped. Stereotypes place a group of individuals in one, singular category and Americans do not like that at all. When engaging with Americans it is important to listen to stories before making a stereotypical judgment call.

You will find that Americans are very open about their struggles, stories, and what they have seen. You will learn more from listening to their stories than simply pushing the same stereotypes you may have heard in the past.

7. Do Not Be Too Formal

Casual is the name of the game in America. Although there are some Americans who maintain a certain formality to their dress, most are happy donning a pair of jeans and sneakers with a t-shirt or a polo if dressing up a little. Embrace being a little more formal while visiting America. Relax a little on formal attire.

8. Sales Tax

You’re going to hate this one. Don’t worry, Americans do too. Sales tax is not factored in with the sales price. It’s insane, but for some reason, government entities make it happen. Sales tax is generally not more than 8%, but it does vary by state, so make sure you know the state sales tax before purchasing items if you are on a strict budget.

9. Drinking Laws

Drinking is not a big deal in most countries and some do not have a legal drinking age. America, however, does and it is 21. Americans feel this is a little much as well. Do not even attempt to buy alcohol if you are under this age. You will be caught, and it is no fun.

America can be a lot of fun to visit, but even more enjoyable when you relocate to this unique part of the world.
