The visa deal is reported to be one of the most significant visa agreements to be signed for the past twenty years.  The agreement is expected to be signed this week while the Foreign Affairs Minister Michael Martin is meeting with the US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte in Washington.

The agreement will allow up to 5,000 US citizens to work and travel in Ireland.  The new visa will be known as a J visa, and will be similar to the  Australian working holiday visa programme in which 13,000 Irish took advantage of last year.
