The US has announced a US Visa and travel ban on Mr. Gbagbo, members of his family and key members of his government, will come into effect today.

US Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs William Fitzgerald made the announcement yesterday, saying that the US is also considering financial sanctions against Mr Gbagbo and his allies.

The US, the UN, the African Union and the European Union have all recognized Mr Gbagbo's challenger, Alassane Ouattara, as the winner of the November 28 presidential election.

The European Union has also imposed an assets freeze and a visa ban on Mr Gbagbo, his wife and 17 others.
