In a statement, US Ambassador to Japan John Roos said conditions such as weather, wind direction and speed, could increase the risk of radioactive contamination.

The US Embassy call to evacuate was prompted by a US Nuclear Regulatory Commission review, an independent analysis of the deteriorating situation in Japan. The review spurred the US government to issue a recommendation that goes further than the Japanese government’s guidelines.

Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant, north of Tokyo, was damaged in the wake of the March 11 magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami.

The Japanese government has recommended a 12-mile evacuation zone around the stricken nuclear reactors.
