UK Visa cap will mean recruitment crisis in care sector

The UK will introduce a permanent annual UK Visa cap on immigration in April next year as well as tightening up immigration rules that will result in a cut in work permits for workers from outside the EU.

The Essex Independent Care Association said the changes do not recognise the problems of social care recruitment.

David Holroyd, of the association, said: “We have shown time and again there is a recruitment crisis in social care. Recruitment from outside the EU of care staff has been a great success and compensated for the lack of willingness of the local population to work in the industry.”

Many care workers are from outside the EU, and are professional, reliable and highly trained nurses that are willing to work the unsociable hours needed by care homes.
