UK immigration study suggests Britain is home to more than one million illegal migrants

Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, announced a proposed amnesty for illegal immigrants who have been here for 10 years but the report warns that as a result UK immigration would dramatically increase.

The report warns that a proposed amnesty for illegal immigrants could add a total of 2.2m to the population as each of the 1.1m pardoned illegals would be entitled to bring at least one spouse, child or other family member into Britain.

The report updates earlier studies from the Home Office and the mayor of London, and challenges  the formula for calculating the number of people who overstay their UK visa every year. Last year the London School of Economics (LSE) for Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, made an upper estimate of 863,000 illegal migrants based on figures to 2007.
