Taiwan President pushes for US Visa Waiver Program inclusion

Also discussed were the Taiwan President’s hopes that Taiwan will be soon included in the US Visa Waiver program, which will allow Taiwanese travellers to the US to simply apply for an ESTA rather than a more costly and protracted application for a US tourist visa.

President Ma congratulated Congressman Gallegly on winning re-election and said that he deeply appreciates the congressman's visit to Taiwan so soon after the election.

Congressman Gallegly has been a good friend to Taiwan, President Ma said.

Negotiations on a bilateral Trade and Investment Framework Agreement between the US and Taiwan are poised to resume at the end of this year.

The Taiwanese government has actively pursued the resumption of mutual trust between Taiwan and the United States at the highest levels, President Ma said.

 Taiwan hopes to acquire F-16 C/D series jet fighters from the United States in the near future, join the US Visa Waiver Program, and sign a bilateral extradition agreement as part of measures to maintain Taiwan's aerial defence capabilities and strengthen mutual judicial assistance.
