New Zealand immigration working hard to attract skilled migrants

Numbers of temporary New Zealand visas issued by New Zealand immigration are not capped in the same way as permanent residence. A temporary visa can be issued where employers can show an employment need that can't be filled by local workers.

The New Zealand immigration service processed 160,000 applications for temporary New Zealand visas in the past year, Mr Cosgrove told TV3.

He also pointed to the government's extending of the rules for students staying in New Zealand after they graduate from a New Zealand university.

At least 15 migration, recruitment and education exhibitions have been held across Britain and in Europe in the past two months. The New Zealand immigration service and business leaders are cooperating to attract more skilled migrants. Skills shortages highlighted include health professionals and IT specialists.
