New Zealand High Commission cable leak to be investigated

The cable was believed to have been sent from the New Zealand High Commission in Canberra to Wellington, soon after Julia Gillard ousted Kevin Rudd from the position as leader of the Australian Labor Party and became Prime Minister.

The cable said Ms Gillard did want to offer Mr Rudd a new roll in the cabinet when she took over the role of Prime Minister.

Mr Rudd had wanted the position of minister of foreign affairs, despite having agreed to stand down immediately and not force a ballot for the party leadership, the cable said.

The cable was obtained by The Australian newspaper.

A spokeswoman for New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said the government was aware of the alleged leak and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is looking into the situation.
