Jacqui Smith, home secretary, said: "The introduction of our Australian-style points system will ensure that only those with skills the country needs can come." She added that migrants "benefit this country economically" and contribute an estimated £6 billion to the country's national output. Ms Smith concluded that it is right that the UK has a system which is "fair but firm". The final stages of the UK immigration shake-up will be put in place by the summer.

In related news, it has been revealed that nearly 800,000 workers from the new EU countries such as Poland have applied for UK immigration in the past four years.
