David Frost, BBC director general, said: "Employers up and down the country tell me that they take on migrant workers because their work ethic is so much better than domestic workers." He added that until the government "gets to grips" with the country's "severe skills shortage" businesses will continue to employ migrant workers in "large numbers". Countries in the A8 list are Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia, Poland, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia and Slovakia. Migrants taking advantage of UK immigration from Romania and Bulgaria are not included in the statistics as they joined the EU later.

In related news, the UK's immigration policy changes are about to be put into effect.
