A statement from the government department said: "[Mr Annakin will] ensure that business as usual continues within Immigration New Zealand, while reviews associated with it are undertaken." The newspaper added that Christopher Blake, the department’s Chief Executive, has confirmed the appointment.

Mr Blake commented: "He will work closely with me and our strategic leadership team to steer Immigration New Zealand through the reviews process and forward." The Star reports that at the moment the New Zealand visa system is processing applicants between a six and twelve month period, by using a list which determines which occupations are in demand.

New Zealand needs skilled migrants: Anyone applying for a New Zealand visa should begin by taking the New Zealand Visa Bureau's online New Zealand visa assessment to see if they meet the basic legislative requirements.
