Flexible working for Britons with a New Zealand visa

The minister of labour, Ruth Dyson, said in parliament: "Work-life balance is not just about delivering benefits to employees - it's also about our overall quality of life and our living standards."

She also noted how the consultation process of the legislation had illustrated how flexible work arrangements can benefit New Zealand's communities, economy and environment.

The legislation will provide certain groups of employees with the right to request flexible working arrangements in terms of hours, times and places of work. It has received widespread support and is based on similar UK law, where it has been very successful.

It is hoped the legislation will help change workplace culture and act as a catalyst for positive change beyond the groups immediately affected, as well as making New Zealand even more attractive for immigration.
