Emigrate to New Zealand – the world's most peaceful country

The results show that if you emigrate to New Zealand, you will be in one of the most politically stable countries in the world, with the least likelihood of a terrorist attack.  The murder rate, likelihood of violent demonstrations, internal conflicts, arms imports and involvement in foreign wars will be of the lowest in the world, and the respect for human rights will surpass expectations.

New Zealand's peacefulness is not the only pulling factor to emigrate to New Zealand; its refreshing, unspoiled environment, high standard (and yet relatively low cost) of living undoubtedly attract migrants from all over the world.

The Australian-based Institute for Economics and Peace worked with the Economist Intelligence Unit to establish the index, and placed Australia at number 19.  New Zealand was pushed up from number 4 position last year, and is now being trailed by Denmark, Norway and Iceland.  Britain was placed at 35, and America at 83 because of its involvement in foreign wars and risks of terrorism.  Iraq was has remained in the last position, and was preceded by Afghanistan and Somalia.

Professor Kevin Clements of Otago University in Dunedin said the Index will encourage more people to emigrate to New Zealand because it exemplifies the pride the nation takes in maintaining peace, safety, security and protection for its population.  This national perspective is particularly attractive to young families looking to give their children a high standard of living, good education and promising employment prospects.

"The index is a pretty good reflection of countries people want to live in, because on bicultural issues and a variety of factors we are scoring well," Professor Clements told the New Zealand Herald.

"If you look at the top 20, they are all small nations based on strong welfare principles, all with good and relatively uncorrupted governance."
