Close to 5000 businesses registered to sponsor migrants

Since November 27, all UK employers have had to apply for a licence to sponsor a migrant worker, effectively replacing the old UK work permit with a system that puts the onus on employers to enforce immigration rules.

To join the list of approved sponsors, employers must demonstrate effective HR practices, and that workers they employ are fully compliant with immigration law.  Once licence, employers can issue a certificate of sponsorship, which allows a migrant worker to apply to enter the UK.

The Border and Immigration Agency, the Home Office division responsible for immigration enforcement, claims that the number of registered employers represents an early success for the new system.
