Brown says new UK immigration system will make it easier for highly skilled migrants

"Those people who have the skills this country needs will find it easier to come to Britain" following the introduction of the new points-based UK immigration system to be introduced next year, Mr Brown insisted.

He described the Highly Skilled Migrant Visa as "highly successful" and noted that there is particularly an ongoing demand for skilled foreigners in the financial services sector. There are several hundred thousand skilled overseas people employed in the City of London.

Mr Brown was trying to assert his position as prime minister as he set out his long-term vision for the country to the CBI, outlining his plans to boost Britain's economy.
