British High Commission donates $295,000 to aid relief efforts after Cyclone Tomas

Fiji was amongst the worst-hit by Cyclone Tomas, which damaged houses and knocked out power and communications. There has been one confirmed dealth from the cyclone, and aid agencies are concerned of an outbreak of typhoid with limited emergency accommodation available for those unable to return home, or without a home to return to.

British High Commissioner Mac McLachlan said there is a need to get help quickly to the worst affected areas.

The British High Commission hopes that the contribution will aid the Fiji Red Cross in quickly addressing some of the immediate needs of those affected.

Mr McLachlan said their sympathy is with the many thousands in evacuation centres and those who remain without access to basic amenities.
