Australian citizenship offered for British spies to work for Australia
The promise of Australian citizenship and work in Australia’s national capital has encouraged up to 50 spies to respond to an advertisement for jobs at the Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) in Canberra.
The ASIS placed the job advertisement at headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) at Vauxhall Cross, and the strong response for the 12 available posts is believed to because of a “crisis of morale” at SIS, also known as MI6.
The ASIS are offering British spies the chance to gain full Australian citizenship while retaining British nationality if they take one of the positions.
A spokesman from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said that it was not prepared to comment on the details of the matter, however, said “there is a very close relationship between the Australian Secret Intelligence Service and SIS, and job advertisements of this type are not unusual”.
