Warnings against Schengen Visa program including Bulgaria, Romania
France and Germany have jointly warned the European Commission that Bulgaria and Romania do not yet fulfill the requirements for entering the continent's visa-free travel zone, a spokesman for Germany's interior ministry said.
On Tuesday, German interior minister Thomas de Maiziere and his French counterpart Brice Hortefeux criticized the lack of progress by the two southeastern EU countries in reforming their judiciary as well as in tackling corruption and organized crime, a key part of Schengen Visa program requirements.
He said those deficits could have "grave consequences for the European Union's security" should the countries be to quickly added to the Schengen area, Europe's visa-free travel zone.
