Tier 2 Sports People Category

The Sports People category is a UK work permit category for professional sports people who intend to work as professional sports people in the UK. The Sports People category is part of the Tier 2 work permit system.

The Sports People category is only open to high-level sports people and coaches who are sponsored by a club (or a professional sports team) that has an Employer Sponsorship Licence issued to sponsor professional athletes.

To qualify under the Sports People category, professional athletes and coaches must:

• Have an internationally established high-level career in professional sport;
• Be able to make a significant contribution at a high level to their sport in the UK;
• Intend to be based in the UK.

Successful applicants under the Tier 2 Sports People category must pass the Tier 2 points test and will be issued a certificate of sponsorship by their employer.  Once this certificate is received, the applicant can apply for entry clearance to the UK from their home country.
