Immigrant used forged ID card after failing to obtain UK work permit
An illegal immigrant who used a fake ID card to enter the UK, get a National Insurance number and a driving licence has been sent to prison for nine months.
The Turkish national Alpaslan Aydin entered Britain in 2007 using a forged Cyprian identity card after a failed attempt to get a real UK work permit in 2006.
Staff at Heathrow Airport queried the validity of his card, but he was allowed to enter the country.
Mr Aydin applied for a National Insurance number at the Department of Work and Pensions in Kent and obtained a provisional driving licence.
When police raided Central Kebabs on Winwick Street on March 27 this year Mr Aydin was asked to provide documentation, and the forged Cypriot ID card he produced was spotted as a fraud and Mr Aydin was arrested.
He appeared at Warrington Crown Court on Monday listening through an interpreter with his head bowed as his barrister told the court he came from a small village with little work and had a wife and infant son at home.
Mr Aydin, a 24-year-old university graduate, had come to the United Kingdom to find work to support them.
“Rather than seek to take money from the state he took a job so he could send money back home,” said barrister Mr Clarke.
He had contributed National Insurance tax and income tax while working here, the court heard.
Judge Stephen Clarke said: “You came into the United Kingdom with a false identity document in April 2007 having come from Turkey.
“You knew that the document was false and thereafter you used the document in order to obtain yourself a National Insurance number and a driving licence.”
He described Mr Aydin as ‘economic immigrant’, and added: “The courts have to regard the entry to the United Kingdom on false documents as being a matter of such seriousness that only a custodial sentence can be justified.”
He sentenced Aydin to nine months in prison, less the 63 days he has spent on remand.
On his release the relevant authorities will decide whether to deport him.
