Chris Holmes informed his employers his employers that he would be moving on with his career by baking his colleagues a cake and writing his resignation letter in the icing.

'Today is my 32st birthday, and having recently become a father I now realise how precious life is and how important it is to spend my time doing something that makes me, and other people, happy,' scrawled Mr Holmes in the icing.

'For that reason I hereby give notice of my resignation, in order that I may devote my time and energy to my family and to my cake business which has grown steadily over the past few years.

'I wish the organisation and my colleagues the best for the future.'

Mr Holmes signed off by signing his name and nickname (Mr Cake) and reminding his, now former, colleagues to purchase their cakes from his new business - www.mrcake.co.uk.

The news of Mr Holmes' novel resignation first came to light when his brother-in-law, Stuart Jackson, shared a picture of the cake on Twitter.

"Mr Brother-in-law has resigned from his 9-5 job in spectacular fashion," tweeted Mr Jackson.

"Jerry Maguire meets Masterchef."
