Record high in Canadian investor visa scheme

The Canadian investor scheme has reached record levels thanks to prudent economic management.

LONDON, 22 June 2010 – The G20 summit in Toronto this weekend will see an international focus on the Canadian Government’s successful negotiation of the financial crisis, with the country now being seen as a viable option for foreign investors due to a specialist immigration stream for investor migrants.

In 2009, Canada welcomed the highest number of investor migrants on record with the strong economy and focused Canadian immigration policies attracting 2,872 investors to migrate, accompanied by their family,

The country has an established Canadian Immigrant Investor Program that enables business owners and qualified managers to immigrate with their families, with migrants free to work, set up new businesses and purchase property.

Yesterday, Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty started an international tour to boast about the nation’s economic record during the financial crisis and to outline Canada’s priorities for this weekend’s G20 summit.

At the summit the Canadian government plans to highlight the Canadian financial system, the prudence displayed by lenders, the vigour of the banking regulator and how the Canadian economy has managed to outperform many industrialised peers during the crisis.

The Canadian Government also encourages investment into Canada by offering permanent residency to those willing to contribute to the economy.

In order to be eligible to immigrate under the program, an investor must demonstrate net worth, and employment or business management requirements amongst others.

The Canadian Immigrant Investor Program basic requirements include:

Once an application is approved migrants are required to make an investment of CA$400,000 with the Canadian or Quebec government for a period of five years, with many choosing to competitively finance this loan through Canadian Visa Bureau’s established banking relationships.

When the visa is approved, the immigrant is free to settle in Canada where they wish. As permanent residents, immigrant investors also have access to state education, health care and other benefits as well as being eligible for Canadian citizenship after three years.

The International Monetary Fund and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development have forecast that Canada will lead growth among industrialized countries, and already Canada has detailed a plan to return to a budget surplus by 2015.
