Student and Trainee Work Visa or Permit

A Student and Trainee Visa/Permit allows certain overseas students and trainees to gain practical work experience in New Zealand as part of their studies.

This is not a general New Zealand Study Visa/Permit, and is intended to last for the required duration of time required for the study or training.

Student and Trainee Visa
You may apply under this policy if you are a:
Medical or Dental Trainee wishing to fulfil a compulsory training requirement by undertaking practical training in New Zealand

To be eligible you must:

  • Be appropriately qualified and experienced;
  • Have a letter of acceptance from a New Zealand hospital; and
  • Not hold a Student or Visitor Permit;
Student in your home country wishing to fulfil a course requirement by undertaking practical work experience in New Zealand

To be eligible you must have:

  • The support of your educational institution; and
  • An offer of work from a New Zealand educational institution or employer; or
Jockey aged 16 or over wishing to undertake an apprenticeship in New Zealand

To be eligible you must have:

  • An offer of employment from a New Zealand trainer;
  • A guarantee of maintenance and accommodation from the New Zealand Racing Conference; and
  • A guarantee of repatriation from your New Zealand trainer should you not continue the apprenticeship.
