A shortage of skilled and experienced independent directors could be stifling the growth plans of small businesses in New Zealand, according to new research. The report found more than half of businesses surveyed expected to be searching for one or more independent directors in the next 12 months. international focus.

United Kingdom directors interested in New Zealand immigration are likely to be in high demand as many growing businesses in New Zealand are looking to increase their international focus. The Waikato University School of Management carries out the annual survey of business governance in New Zealand. It is one of New Zealand's largest business surveys, canvassing more than 1,400 New Zealand commercial enterprises - most of them in the small to medium business sector.

There is high demand for directors with experience, knowledge and strategy for growing businesses, usually with turnover of between NZ$20 million (£7.1 million) and NZ$100 million (£35.6 million). The survey also noted the majority of these businesses have an international component to their operations. As well as highlighting the growing demand for independent directors, the survey notes this is underpinned by a shift towards regarding the role of the board as adding strategic value rather than a being a compliance tool.

Associate professor Jens Mueller, the author of the study, commented: "What we are seeing this year is less demand for professional skills such as accountants and lawyers and more emphasis on track record, work experience and global business experience.

"Clearly those looking for independent directors want people who can give strength to their business through having experienced some of the pitfalls associated with growth. Many also want diversity of age and global expertise to assist in rejuvenating boards and bringing a different mindset to the board table."
