A state of emergency has been declared after a powerful earthquake struck Christchurch yesterday, causing widespread damage and the deaths of 65 people.
The 6.3 magnitude quake - classed by experts as an aftershock to last September's 7.1 quake - struck at 12.51pm New Zealand time, during the busy time of the day.
New Zealand immigration visa processing centre in Crystal Plaza in Cathedral Square is closed until further notice following earthquake.
People with a New Zealand Visa that is about to expire should call the INZ contact centre (0508 55 88 55) for advice as to where to send their applications.
People whose passports are being held by INZ in Christchurch pending extension of a visitor visa or other New Zealand visa and who now wish to leave the country should also call the contact centre.
Christchurch is the largest city in New Zealand's South Island and the country's third largest.
