Air New Zealand, New Zealand's national airline carrier, has announced it would be supplying an additional direct flight between Brisbane and Queenstown.

The announcement comes as a step of faith for the holiday destination, showing the airline has utmost confidence that the alpine resort would remain a hot favourite during New Zealand's peak winter months, and even throughout the global recession.

According to Fourcorners, the extra flight takes the number of direct flights to Queenstown from Australia to ten per week, amounting to a huge 1,500 seats during the peak ski season.

Destination Queenstown General Manager Marketing Graham Budd welcomed the move by Air New Zealand, saying that their focus this year would be attracting the traditionally strong market from Australia to choose New Zealand's ski fields over Australia's.

Every year, around 50,000 people fly directly to Queenstown during the six months to December.  Last year, that number increased by 18.6 per cent when compared with the year before, and has been attributed to  a 21 per cent increase in the number of direct flights from the east coast of Australia.

Hundreds of international seasonaires will also be hoping to call New Zealand "home" this winter; following the European and American winters, snow bunnies from the northern hemisphere often head to the winter season Down Under to work on the slopes and work another season.  Most of these travellers can work on a New Zealand working holiday visa, which allows nationals from participating countries to holiday and work in New Zealand for up to 12 months in any given job.  British nationals also have the opportunity of extending this visa for another eleven months.
