Engineering manager Wayne Munro of internet search technology company SLI Systems told The Press: "It's pretty hard to find these people and if we find the right people we'll grab them whether or not we have a vacancy for that person straight away. We are finding staff, but at the same time we're growing and we need more. We're never catching up."

Another IT boss, Rod Drury of Xero also described an "absolute shortage" due to constant growth and said they are frantically recruiting. "We're always looking for staff. If we find good people we create roles for them. We don't let good people go."

Application and web development and networking technology are the areas experiencing the highest demand.

A study released this month by the International Data Corporation found that over 11,000 jobs are expected to be created in the IT sector in the next four years. The last Information Technology Recruiters Survey published by the Department of Labour showed that 118 out of the 134 specialist IT areas are suffering acute shortages.

New Zealand needs skilled IT professionals: Anyone applying for a New Zealand visa should begin by taking the New Zealand Visa Bureau's online New Zealand visa assessment to see if they meet the basic legislative requirements.
