Auckland airport in joint ventures to market a holiday in New Zealand
Auckland airport is on a mission to increase the number of people on holiday in New Zealand, and has started by entering joint marketing ventures with airlines and tour operators.
Increasing the number of people on holiday in New Zealand is a priority for the tourism industry during the economic downturn, because tourism contributes around 9% of New Zealand's GDP and is one of the country's largest export industries.
The plan of attack will focus on bringing people on holiday in New Zealand through Auckland Airport first, and then will link them up with their tour operator once on the ground.
For example, Emirates and a winter holiday wholesaler will promote a ski holiday in New Zealand, and Malaysia Airlines will be teaming up with a newspaper promotion in India.
"While we already have another five or six joint venture campaigns in the pipeline, Auckland Airport is actively looking for more win-win opportunities with all our airline, trade, and tourism customers to promote travel to New Zealand through Auckland," Airport chief executive Simon Moutter told the Trenz tourism conference in Auckland yesterday.
Tourism New Zealand has also switched its focus on attracting young New Zealand working holiday makers to the country, because despite the economic conditions, the New Zealand working holiday market is showing positive results.
The New Zealand working holiday allows travellers aged 18-30 years from specific countries to holiday New Zealand for up to 12 months (23 months for British nationals) and work during that time to supplement their holiday.
